”Panopticon” 2008

‘Panopticon’ is an installation consisting of eighteen CCTV cameras, arranged in two parallel rows and partly submerged in concrete. The concrete mass covering 100m2 (Gallery room) will be ‘bristled’ with glassy vandal-resistant domes. Transparent shields hide the lens of CCTV cameras aimed at monitoring of public space. Through its very form, the installation directly refers to the issue of ‘Surveillance Culture’ - social surveillance carried out by means of technological devices. This problem has been entering our everyday lives in an increasingly aggressive way for some time now, since the borders of our privacy are being constantly explored, penetrated and gradually took over.
The ‘Panopticon’ installation puts the viewer in an unusual space which, due to its form and mysterious ambiguity, inspires a moment of reflection.  The viewer is surrounded by operating monitoring devices; he can hear them working, yet he does not know whether he is being recorded by a single camera or by all of them. And if he is being recorded, what will happen to the material on which he has been registered?

”Panopticon” jest instalacja składającą się z osiemnastu kamer CCTV, ustawionych w dwóch równoległych do siebie szeregach i częściowo zatopionych w betonie. Rozlana na powierzchni 100m2 płaszczyzna betonowej masy zostanie „najeżona” szklistymi kopułami „wandaloodpornymi”. Przeźroczyste osłony, kryją pod sobą obiektywy kamer przemysłowych służących do monitorowania przestrzeni publicznej. Poprzez swoja formę instalacja nawiązuje bezpośrednio do problematyki społecznego nadzoru prowadzonego za pośrednictwem urządzeń technologicznych -„Surveillance Culture”. Problematyka ta ostatnimi czasy wkracza coraz agresywniej w nasze codzienne życie, ponieważ granice zarysowujące teren naszej prywatności są nieustannie eksplorowane, penetrowane, i krok po kroku zawłaszczane.
Instalacja „Panopticon” stawia odbiorcę w niezwykłej przestrzeni, która przez swoja formę, oraz tajemnicze niedomówienie skłania go do refleksji. Wokół niego znajdują się rzędy funkcjonujących aparatur monitorujących, słyszy pracę tych elektronicznych urządzeń, nie wie czy jest nagrywany przez wszystkie, czy przez żadną z nich. A jeśli jest właśnie nagrywany to co dalej stanie się z tym materiałem, na którym został zarejestrowany?

Biography

Roch Forowicz was born in 1978 in Warsaw, Poland. In 2005, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Studio of Multimedia Artistic Creation at the Faculty of Graphic Arts. Since 2007, he has been working as an assistant at the Inter-University Studio of Multimedia Artistic Creation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Organising Upgrade!Warsaw since 2007. Curator and co-founder of 2.0 gallery in Warsaw. Participant of many expositions and festivals, such as FILE festival (BR), HAIP Festival (SI), Liwoli09 (AT), Paraflows 09 (AT), Urban Research (DE), Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej - Zamek Ujazdowski (PL), Komuna Otwock, Entropia, STUDIO, WEF, Krytyka Polityczna etc.

Through his artistic activity, Roch Forowicz refers to the ‘city surveillance’ culture – constant supervision by means of CCTV and data processing and filing software and devices.His activity is radical, often characterised by illegal ‘hacktivist’ interventions, consisting in intercepting and using technological devices against their creators’ will.
